Five-Carat Soul

James McBride

4.03 AVERAGE

Wish I could rate this higher because the actual five carat soul stories are AMAZING. I would read an entire series about those kids. But the rest of the stories just weren't my jam.

James McBride has become a go-to author for me. The Good Lord Bird was my first read of him - and one of my favorite books of last year. This collection of stories are poignant and brilliant - add McBride to your list

Excellent collection of short stories. The audiobook is a treat as well.

This book is actually two novellas and some short stories. All of them are interesting and give me a peculiar sense of melancholy. I can't quite grasp the sense of McBride's writing style, but it's engaging in a non-overt way and evokes distinct imagery without being overly detailed in descriptions. I don't usually read short story collections but this one is worth a try.
