I like this book more than the rating suggests.  However, it still did not grab me like some do, hence the lower rating.  There’s nothing specifically wrong—and much that is great—about the book.  If I were much younger, I think the book might have had a deeper emotional impact.  I loved the descriptions and the weaving in of history.  I am not big on fantasy, especially the “touch of fantasy“ in an otherwise straightforward novel.  The neurodivergence was somewhat interesting, but again did not move me to love the book.  Very solid.  Very good.  Worth reading for the cultural diversity.

I don’t know if I liked the book, but it is 4star writing. It sparked an interest in maps that comes entirely from this book.
You can tell the author spent a lot of time researching.

I cared little for the characters and  the story started to drag towards the end.

I dislike how Abu Sayeed died or that he died at all; like he had no place in this story.

This story led to a lot of reflections and new experiences. I also learned quite a bit - I was glad to also learn of the mundane.
The female characters in this book are so strong. It’s so amazing.
There are a great many quotes and situations and questions. I think the best books make something in you shift just a bit and this has me asking lots of them.

This was a slightly uneven book for me. I could have done without the historical plot which I found hard to follow and wasn't invested in. The contemporary plot was much better and had some chilling moments. Nour was a wonderful protagonist and I was really willing for her to make it through all of the horrible experiences piled on her. This book did give me a deeper understanding of the plight of refugees not just from Syria but across the world.

The last thing I will say is that for a book where maps are a major theme, where were the maps? I had to keep looking up the characters' locations and this would have been much easier had a map been provided!

The situations that the protagonist and her family went through were mind-bendingly sad, and it's overwhelming, to say the least, to think of the staggering number of refugees who experience these terrors on a daily basis. The author's prose was gorgeous.
