The more I reflect on it, the more masterful I feel Thomas's characters are. The inner monologue of Starr navigates daily and systemic racism in ways that shed light for both sides to empathize and learn. Timely and instructive.

this is a book i would recommend to anyone. it’s something you just need to have read at some point.

i’ve been wanting to read this forever and i’m glad i finally got to it.
i’m usually someone who likes “feel-good books” and the hate u give definitely does not fit that category. on the contrary, it actually confronts you with uncomfortable, devastating truths. not “feel-good” at all.
nevertheless, that does not make it any better or worse. making you happy or giving you an escape is not the point of this book; facing the reality of real issues, such as racism and police violence, is.
it’s just as important, if not even more, as the escapism a “feel-good” book would give you. sometimes you have to take in all the frustration, anger and devastation these characters face, because that is what real people face every day. this book shows you the ugly truth and it does so in a very grounding, accessible and thought provoking way i appreciate a lot.

i usually rate books according to my enjoyment. however, in this case, i have a hard time due to what i mentioned before: this book made me frustrated and sad. but because it was supposed to, not because it was bad in any shape or form. as a consequence, i will skip the rating on this one for now.
still, i can confidently say that i have nothing bad to say about it. it did what it was meant to do and it will definitely stick with me.

I liked this book a lot. Starr has a great voice and I really liked the dynamic she had with her family. Her day to day problems will probably resonate with a lot of teenagers, and the story of the police shooting and its aftermath is sensitive and well-told.

It does feel like the book is trying to do a bit too much; Starr’s relationship with her boyfriend isn't really dealt with too much and sometimes just felt like a way to shoehorn in a nice white person.

Overall I would recommend this book.
