I give the audio book reader (Bahni Turpin) as many stars as the author (Angie Thomas). It's about a 16-year-old girl who witnessed her friend's shooting death by a police officer, and her gradual decision to speak out about what she saw. She's grown up in poverty, but now attends an affluent school on the other side of the city where she feels the need to be a different version of herself to not be "that" black girl. I highly recommend it. (warning: language throughout) This book helps me understand.

3.5 This book is everything everyone says about it but it's also way too schmatzy and sentimental. I would have preferred a much harsher angrier truer reality. The YA I have read recently has relied way too much on sentimentality. I'll take profound insight and truth over that any day and so would teens I think.

everyone and anyone needs to read this. heartbreakingly beautiful. a reminder that nothing is new. yet we can be the change we want to see in the world. if you are or are going to be an ELA teacher, read this in your classrooms. read this in a book club. read this alone. read this to someone, anyone. a beyond important book. deserves a permanent spot in a literary cannon that’s actually a literary cannon. black lives matter.

A great book to introduce or explain the Black Lives Matter movement. Narrated by a teenager living in a poor, run down neighborhood with gangs ruling the streets, she tells the story of how her best friends are killed and how she’s trying to fit in at a mostly white, affluent school on the other side of the tracks. Lots of really big issues are covered in this book in a good way to educate and open a conversation. Thought provoking and well written. I’d recommend this book to anyone over the age of 14.
