I was genuinely surprised by how captivating this book was bc there aren’t many reviews on it.
Seriously every part of it was full of action and drug me tf in.
It’s a two book series, you don’t have to read the second one. But you’re gonna want to with this writing.
Athena ate and left no crumbs
Please don’t be turned away by the people rating 1 star. It’s likely because it doesn’t have crazy amounts of spice, the plot is worth it though.
It’s not high fantasy, it’s got predictable plot points, but it’s intended that way. In the kind of way that “I know something before the MC” does. Quick and fun fantasy read

A nice book with a perfect plot. I wish there had been a bit more doubt about who she was going to choose, but it was fine as it was. There are follow-up books with other stories, but I’m not tempted to read them right away.
It was good, I plan to continue the series
There wasn’t anything WOW for me but I did like it

Was this realistic? No. But it said it was fantasy spec fic. Could it have used some more character development? Yes. But I still devoured it in two days. Not sure I agree with the “dark romance” tag. Other than time period typical male possessiveness given that women were literally property, the only real “dark aspect was the violence. It was gratuitous, but not even really descriptive. Not sure how I feel about the fact that I saw every plot twist coming. While it would be nice to think I’m just that observant, I think it was too obvious in the breadcrumbs that were sprinkled. But when it comes down to it, I am a simple woman with simple pleasures. You tell me the male lead is essentially Colin O’Donoghue’s Captain Hook from Once Upon a Time, and I will be reading the story.
Good enough to read the sequels but not my favorite
Oh dear. Of all my January 2024 reads, this was the most difficult to get through. I think 3 stars may have been generous considering I never want to hurt someone’s feelings but I am disappointed in this book. There was so much potential! But I think I went into this assuming it would be a smutty, raunchy pirate romance novel and that definitely didn’t happen.
Like I said, there was potential. The story was fun but felt like it was a bit all over the place and perhaps rushed. I’m not sure pirate ships travel that fast—do they? Maybe I’m trippin’. It starts in one kingdom, then moves to another, then an island all in such a short period. I feel as if there was a lot of tell, and not a lot of show in the plot progression. Some things may have been skipped over to shorten the book as a whole. Maybe it’s best it was short though.
The description on the back eludes to this being a rather spicy book.
"You enslaved me!"
"Nay, I liberated you, my lady. And there will be more liberating to come if you behave."
AND YET!!!
NO SPICE???!!!?
HELLO?!?
I’m not 100% sure the Greek Mythology was well placed in this storyline though either. It all seemed a bit awkward and jumbled. The characters were a bit eh as well. Very surface-level emotions. The banter is as non-existent as the smut. Which is frustrating because I am a sucker for good pirate smut.
I own the second book, but I don’t think I’m in a rush to read it. Maybe towards the end of the year when I need short reads to finish out my challenge. At least the covers are pretty.
Overall Rating: (a generous) 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
You should read this if…
You want a quick read with no smut and maybe are trying to stick a toe into the dark romance genre.
You shouldn’t read this if…
You were expecting pirate smut and a well-developed plot for such a unique story.
