Meh. This book is way too similar to Pirates of the Caribbean to be a coincidence. And I realized too often while reading that I would just rather be watching Pirates of the Caribbean.
This was a very quick read. I started it after work and finished it before I went to bed. There is an author note telling us that this is an alternate historical earth and that she made no effort to have her mythological creatures match standard/accepted lore.
I have no problem with that - but it does beg the question of why not just create a strict fantasy world where you aren't asking your more picky readers to overlook the complete non-understanding of how the social structure of that time worked?
Since I knew she did it on purpose, I was able to roll with it, but the plot does not hang together at all. If you pull on a single thread it will all come tumbling down. Characters seem to have and forget knowledge as the particular scene dictates. Motivations are extremely unclear - maybe she thought she was being mysterious instead of confusing?
And, I don't want to give spoilers, but she made it so obvious to the readers I have a hard time thinking of it as a spoiler, why give a referenced character and a met character the same extremely distinctive first name and then have him be surprised when people - eventually - figure out he's the same guy?
Finally, between the "Dark Fairy Tale" subtitle and the trigger warnings I expected it to be much spicier and darker. I'm guessing she calls it dark because of the excessive body count - it has to be well into the triple digits - but the rampant death is almost glossed over and barely seems to make an impact on our innocent, sheltered heroine. So, it's hard to see it as anything more than set dressing.

Stone being the presumed dead brother was just lazy writing.
