Troupes, troupes, troupes! I know this book is available on KU, but I found it through targeted Instagram ads. I will say they were very effective since I ordered the paperback, after trying to get my local library to buy it first. The ad gave away about the first 20% of the story, and then I was left questioning if this story had a previous life as a Pirates of the Caribbean fanfic. The back of the book promises a "steamy dark fantasy,"... Maybe I'm just a jaded adult lit reader, but these folks had about as much steam as iced tea.
The characters themselves were entertaining if a little predictable. The world building felt a little scant. (Perhaps because it's set an already established pirate world.) The plot moved along fairly quickly, but it still felt like a bit of a slough to get to the end, which of course ends on the promise of a sequel. I found myself counting chapter pages towards the end.
With each introduction of mythical creatures and living gods I felt myself underwhelmed.
The book did have delightful parts here and there, and I found myself giggling despite myself. It's not a bad read by any measure, but I think it could be better with more character and world development.
