This was so bad. I actually don’t think you understand how bad this was.

It was like if your very racist grandfather with dodgy views on most things wrote a boom where he rambles on and on and talks about the good old days and says he can’t be racist because he had a black neighbour.

The history in this was just. Bad. I don’t think he’s ever heard of nuance or extra context. The main historical sources he used were letters from random students on gap years found volunteer work. Like sorry?

I don’t think he expressed more than 1 theological opinion of his own throughout the entire book. All he said in his own words can be condensed down to “there is violence in the gospels. Violence can’t be all bad. We need to use violence to fight for justice.” (granted that’s a very ungenerous summary but you get the gist.)

For  of the key themes (e.g. love, justice, self defence) he spent like 3 pages complaining about how people don’t understand these terms and don’t act on them or whatever and then he just didn’t define them! What?!

This book felt like it was trying to be A Theology of Liberation for beginners. But it wasn’t. Yeah it was easier to read, but also you will gain nothing.

This book started getting good around page 90 when there were about 7 pages on Liberation  Theology and 6 of them were comprised of exclusively Gutierrez quotes. I am not joking when I say the only theology in this was quotes from other people. Just read Gutierrez ffs.

0.25 stars were for having passable grammar (there were only a few typos! Congrats.) and the other half was for quoting someone better than himself.

Also how was this guy everywhere? Like why has he been present at every conflict vaguely involving religion since ww1?? I’m not suggesting he’s been the cause of these things I’m just saying something’s looking sus…

Just after finishing reading I was gonna give this 1.75 or 2 stars, but then I wrote this and actually realised I hate it, gained nothing, and don’t think I could have gained anything even if someone had a gun to my head. I guess in that situation we might work out the value of force finally.

Tbh I might knock this down to 0.25 stars. That’s still more than it deserves. Can you give something 0 stars??
