This was short but not necessarily sweet.

Rafe, the self-made American, has been told he must Mary Lady Natalie from the peerage if he is to inherit from his father. However, on first meeting her Lady's Companion, Hannah, he is instantly tugging her under stairways and forcing her to accept his kisses, despite her own horror.

Then, despite his continued advances on Hannah, we learn that he is still courting Lady Natalie, going so far as to kiss her too, despite only having interest in Hannah. And what should be unforgivable is merely unlikeable, because we can see his struggles in wanting to inherit, but falling in love with someone else. However, I do wish he got more reprimands, and actually had to grovel; instead he gets off scot-free whilst poor Hannah nurses a broken heart.

Despite all of this, I still found this an enjoyable read, and I did enjoy his letter. LK knew how to bring a tortured hero back into good graces.

What did, however, bring this up rating was seeing the other wallflowers and their relationships. I'm not surprised Evie and Sebastian got their own chapter, with him being as swoony as ever.

"I'll have to show you what happens to women who stand in my way." His hands slipped around her...with one hand, he grasped the nape of her neck, and tilted her head backward. And his mouth took hers. Hannah went rigid in his arms, straining backward, but he followed her...she reached up to push his head away.

On page assault from "hero" to heroine that's portrayed as romantic. This made me sick to my stomach.
