Great book. Well written, great characters, intriguing plot.

That being said, this is by far, in my opinion, the weakest entry of the Drizzt novels thus far.

Not a lot of story advancement from the last novel. It definitely will lead to another series.

There are a lot of fantasy writers out there... What makes RA Salvatore different? To start, it is the character building. Most of his characters, even if they aren't the main ones, are not cardboard cutouts. They have conflicting emptions, desires, and often disagree about what the heroes of the novels want to do (sometimes vociferously). This was very evident in this story as the invading orcs consolidate their holdings and plot their next move.
The dwarfs and the humans who fight side-by-side exemplify this as they do so with different goals that sometimes lead to trouble. Often the staid, one dimensional characters see added merely as a contrast to the more defined personae. One lack in this tale was the companions themselves.... They have some important adventures and play some key roles, but increasingly Salvatore seems to be leaving the impetus and ideas to the more ancillary characters, for the better I think.
That being said, I had a couple of problems with this book. Drizzt's companion, fresh off her revenge killing of the orc who killed her lover continues her amorous advances... seemingly little bothered by any residual feelings. There are other characters that seem to undergo random personality shifts as well (Delly Curtie for example).
My other problem with this book is that, though it is the end of a trilogy, little is wrapped up, making this a lead in to the next series.
All in all, definitely worth the read if you have come this far in the series and with some promising developments on the horizon.

Yikes. That could easily have been combined with the last book as there was hardly anything that wasn’t a rehash of The Lone Drow. And can’t say I’m fan of Delly Curtie getting built up over the last two books only to be stuffed in the fridge for the sake a love triangle we’re all exhausted by.

I enjoyed this okay, but I'll be taking a break from this series. It's the fantasy literary equivalent of comfort junk food - like movie theater popcorn in my case. It's good in sporadic instances but not really something to binge on. And that's pretty much what I've been doing with these books.

Partially nostalgia, partially just wanting something fun and easy for an audiobook, I've been going through the Legend of Drizzt books for a few months now, up to book 16(!) which is probably the most I've ever read in a single series. This is the book where I take my break, and not because it's any worse than the preceding entries, but because I need something else in my diet. The foreshadowing for the next book was appealing though, so it probably won't be too long.

The story? Rogue drow try to manipulate frost giants and orcs into sowing chaos around Mithril Hall, where Drizzt's friend Bruenor rules, but things get out of hand when Obould, the orc chieftain, becomes more than they can handle. Drizzt, thinking his friends dead, is trying to strike the orc forces where he can, while his friends work to defend Mithril Hall.

It's... fine. Look, I'm not going to recommend this to anyone that isn't already into the series. Have you read the previous Drizzt books, and do you want to continue? This is the book that comes after 15. If you haven't, I'd say that the establishing Crystal Shard series was fun and go start with that if you want somethin akin to the Dragonlance series from the 80s but with more precise action scenes.

Not the ending I was expecting, and I'm not a huge shipper of Drizzt and Cattie-brie, but overall the story was well worth the read. :)

Unfortunately most of this was a bit tedious to read, though started to grab my attention more later on. Too bad since usually FR books are good fun and I get a kick out of them. Thousand Orcs was the high point of Hunter's Blades trilogy and then just plummeted from there. In both Lone Drow and Two Swords, I heavily preferred the dwarf story lines and Drizzt became mostly annoying.
