An interesting take on how capitalism prevents people from acting morally, clearly shown by Shen Te's goodness and her contrasting alter ego Shui Ta. Maybe this is just because I prefer reading novels but the message did feel quite simplistic at times and like Brecht really wants to emphasise capitalism = bad (although the storyline is still quite complex and the characters are mostly well developed).

This is a materialist fairy tale where "no good deed goes unpunished." It offers sweetness and sadness, a simple homeliness and an idea more grand than the humble circumstances of its birth.
