Karen McBride's debut novel is absolutely stunning in both its prose and exploration of grief. She does a masterful job of balancing multiple heavy themes while maintaining a light and humorous tone. I recommend this enough!!!

3.5/5. I adored McBride’s take on Nanabush, and the dynamics between characters were great. She really did a seamless job weaving traditional stories with modern issues and universal themes like grief. I’m really glad I found this book ❤️

Really liked the plot of the book and the background (the blend of the spiritual and "real" world), and there were some beautiful descriptions of the characters' home and how they felt about the land. My only issue was with the dialogue (it felt a bit ... unrealistic, and many times used too much for exposition), but this is a first novel after all! All in all, I would recommend this book.
