David B's Nocturnal Conspiracies is a beautifully illustrated collection of the cartoonist's dreams, but that's about it. Tough to recommend when dreams are, arguably, incoherent by nature, though (apparently) David B. remembers more oneiric details upon waking than I do. I was hoping for surreal Kafkaesque parables, but these "nocturnal conspiracies" are far more fragmented.

Enjoyed this collection of dreams. Blue and black colors really set the tone/mood of absurdism. However I feel like the words are unnecessary & distract from the pictures. Let the pictures tell the story, it's dreamland after all. It doesn't need to make sense. The reader can interpret the pictures in their own way.

As much as I am fascinated by dreams, I was surprised how dull this book ended up being.

Well, I must say, you should probably read David B's Epileptic first before anything else because it's such a personal exploration of a boy growing up in France with a brother who has epileptic seizures. It's more extensive and somehow more imaginative. The dreams are also very creative and abstract and make sense in the way dreams can only make sense. It was fascinating to see into David B's mind knowing his autobiographical history. There are a great many allusions to dreams in Epileptic but to have them as the center of the topic was quite different and unique. The drawings, as ever, are fantastic but what's more to love is the baring all of one's subconscious soul. I feel like this novel will grow on me like a fine record does and I will come back to it more and more as my life continues on.

The individual frames were often beautiful, poetic and haunting, but the text was lacking. To be fair, the work is a collection of dreams, so flushed out plots and characters would not have been true to the project. Visually strong, but lacking overall.

This is an excellent book that I kind of didn't like because it so perfectly captured really creepy and sinister elements of dreams/nightmares.
