another reviewer described this book as hypnotic and i think that is the perfect word - i haven't disappeared into a book like that since i was in my early teens
first of all, i love the writing style. as someone who typically dislikes overly descriptive writing because of how flowery it gets, au's approach is refreshing and also just gorgeous??
secondly, i cannot describe exactly what this book is about (partially because i finished it like 35 min ago and i'm still reeling), but that feels very appropriate. if you're the kind of person who appreciates impressions over absolute truths, you'll probably appreciate this. i do want to stress than when i say impressions i do not mean ambiguity - au is communicating Something very clearly, and i know what it is, but i don't know how to word it (and to be honest i don't think she does either, probs why it took an 80 page book - but maybe that is how you word it?)
would strongly recommend this book to anyone with immigrant parents, most english students, anyone who has experienced gifted kid syndrome, and people who monologue/have extended conversations with imaginary audiences in their own heads - and would recommend being somewhat critical of the narrator and paying attention to what they Don't say and do

It feels like the breeze in autumn, both chilly and comforting. A short story about a woman and her mother's journey in Japan. With a bit of flashbacks during the journey, trying to transcribe the meaning of life. The detail description of the story made me feel like I was the one who went through it. It was me who wandering through Japan, having short trips, walking here and there, and many more. I wish there would be more depth in character development. The connection between the main character and her mother is not as strong as I wished. Maybe if it's not a short story, the character development and their chemistry could be better. Overall, the story was pretty enjoyable for me.

Short, sweet, and heartfelt. There's no dialogue in there but it has some of the loveliest descriptions of environments and the character's reflections on life. I recommend this one to people who like paying attention to the little things
