me he quedado tan impactada después de leer este libro que lo terminé ayer y se olvidó actualizarlo, simplemente OMFG (literalmente)
This is a queer retelling of the fall of Satan which is split into two acts.
"Oh? You create the universe?"
"Not create," the angel answered fast, as if he needed to correct Lucifer very quick or face repercussion "Only God creates"
Reading Act 1 it is like closing your eyes and hearing your first symphony. You witness the birth and creation of a new angel, Lucifer, who is regarded as The Angel of Beauty. He is God's favorite who is constantly called upon to sing praises and lead other angels in worship. Lucifer adores God but he is timid and ashamed of his own beauty, even refusing to look upon reflections of himself lest he begin to sob. The other angels adore him for this and encourage it. That is until he meets the beloved archangel Michael, The Angel of Strength. They grow closer each day as Michael teaches Lucifer that there is nothing shameful in loving your own self and body. Lucifer learns to slowly be able to do just that and blossoms when finding his identity.
'I feel aged. I feel as if you've aged me with your own hands, Michael. Ripened me. Like a red fruit, at the end of a branch, hanging at it's peak. Beautiful - and just about to fall.'
He loves Micheal. But this God is a jealous one.
'Gathering their clothes, taking each other's hands, and laughing, they'd run away from Him, as fast as they could. So that He doesn't see, doesn't notice. Two angels creating love, creating'
Maybe paradise is not paradise.
The way rafael nicolás is able to twist this beautifully innocent tale of first love when entering Act 2 is insane. In Act 1 you completely forget what this will eventually lead to. You are gravitated towards Lucifer, you love him (I still love him). He is full of hot steaming Catholic guilt and if you grew up as a queer Catholic - you get it. I was horrified and gaping and heartbroken in Act 2. I stayed up till the AM to finish the whole book and then laid in bed awake still thinking about it.
'He found that if he reached there was still an umbilical cord, wrapped around his neck, and it was chaining him to his Father.'
The creation of sin being borne from love for one another and not just for God is just wowoowow. Adding this to required reading for everyone with religious trauma.
This is currently standing as my top read of 2024 and I have a feeling it won't be budging. Please check the TW's before reading this book they are listed towards the front, most of them don't come in until Act 2.

Paradise Lost already had me siding with Lucifer but now I’m an official Lucifer apologist. UPDATE: I REREAD IT. Ugh still soo good but for some reason hurt more than the first time?
A gut-wrenching story of love and betrayal, and even though I knew how it would end, I couldn't help hoping for a happier ending for Lucifer. Absolutely beautiful.
Edit: I read this book for the first time earlier this year and loved it, and I've just now finished reading the newer version and the added passages and detail have elevated the story so much. I cried again. 10/10

A beautiful queer story that explores religion, trauma, abuse, and retells the fall of Lucifer in a truly ethereal way. rafael’s use of imagery, fluid shifts between perspectives, and the intricate way we are brought inside the minds of the characters is intoxicating.
This is a book to read if you love prose, and very conceptual and abstract beginnings that lead slowly, inevitably to tragedy. Each piece builds on itself in a way that paid off as we watched Lucifer journey through this book to his biblical fate.
I will be thinking about this book and the masterful, tactical way it destroyed me for months. I deeply related in the beginning to the queer way Lucifer struggles with himself and religion.

4.5 ☆
I don't know where to start with my review... The writing was beautiful. At times I found myself struggling slightly to follow along, but I believe the way everything was crafted did a wonderful job at getting you in the mind of Lucifer.
I liked being able to see Lucifer fall more and more; his thoughts took up the page and unnatural sentences showcased his madness (or whatever you might call it) really well.
I had initially not planned to read this when I did, but I felt the voices compelling me. I'm glad I listened. Parts of this story made me sad, happy, upset, disgusted, do a thousand yard stare. The works. I will also mention I took a two hour break because I started having an existential crisis while reading!
Reading the entire thing within 24 hours also helped me stay on top of what was happening. Hard to tell how much time truly passes up in Heaven, I guess.
Hopefully my Catholic Sunday school teacher doesn't remember me. I think she'd hate me (probably already does) for this. Welp!

"'You're paradise to me, Michael. And you're not like the others.' Lucifer moved his hand to his friend's curls and scratched lightly at his scalp. 'Ambition in your eyes — strength and desire for more. You would be a king. When I take the Throne, you would love to sit on it with me, right? Or would you want to build an even larger one, so that we can settle it above the Most High's? You're starting to wonder it too, aren't you? What if there was no God, no Father? Only you and me, who are like Him, who together are greater than Him? We could be kings, gods.'"
^ beautiful beautiful beautiful so amazing im even adding a second quote
"'Forgive me.' Michael's weighted gaze lifted. 'You're everything to me, the stars and the moons, the heat and the cold, the earth and the seeds, the waters and the flowers, but you are not God.'"
^ AHHHHHHHH
