TW: Extensive talks about Sexual Assault

Id give this book 3.5 — It was a lot I guess. This book is filled with great stylistic choices. I loved the different voices through text with single quotation marks, the flowery language, the degradation of speech and thought being parallel to a fall into madness. I don’t know. I think there was something more I wanted from this book but also something less.

There were parts of Part II that were too much, language wise. Like the whole “teehee i made new words” thing was so stupid. Like I get it, but maybe it’s just the presentation of it that rubbed me the wrong way. I think I also would have like a conversation between Rosier and Lucifer in the colosseum about their assaults from Asmodeus and God. It felt like we were building up to that point but it fell when Lucifer held him at arms length.

I also would have liked some moral punishment for the whole raping of Lucifer in the garden of eden. Because it was offscreen, speculative, and referenced through internal monologues, it didn’t seem necessary. If, again, a conversation was had between Rosier and Lucifer about their parallel circumstances and how maybe this God isn’t so merciful then It would have been a very successful plot point. Or with Michael! When Lucifer is doing his whole “Create with me, Michael” thing, talking about the monotony of paradise, his punishment, how when He punished Lucifer and took his voice, God had hurt him and everyone watched. What happened in the garden would have been great to mention there, to explain /why/ he felt the way he did about God, rather than it just being like I think his second punishment was being raped but okay.

Also ayo God why put the beast in him if you knew it would end like this. Seems like a rookie move on your part, just sayin.

I think I’m just a little dissapointed. But, had things continued into part II with the vibes and language of part I, I think i would have given it 4 stars.

Really enjoyable, unique, freshly written. Wildly inspiring language. The personification is amazing. Only drawback is the plot isn’t riveting, it’s more of a character piece but outside of Michael and Lucifer and the Lord I wasn’t super interested in the characters. I would’ve liked some more complexity in character choices and in the overall plot, but genuinely one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever read. I’ve never marked up a book as much as this one.

This is was emotionally devastating. I loved it.

I know I'm an eternal religion major but goodness gracious. This was lovely to spend time with.

Made me very sad, at the end, but so very worth it.
