"they'd run away from Him, as fast as they could. So that He doesn't see, doesn't notice. Two angels creating love, creating."

I initially picked up this book because I was perplexed by the general plot and descriptions of it. I had zero clue what a queer retelling of the events leading to Paradise Lost would entail considering I had only known that Lucifer's fall from heaven was due to his pride. However upon reading the story, reading of how Lucifer met Michael, and how they affected one another, I started putting the pieces together and I can confidently say that this is one of the most imaginative, unique, and beautiful retellings of a story that I have ever read.

Rafael Nicolás writes such vivid and unique descriptions of Heaven, Eden, and the angels. From the first chapter I was completely engrossed with the characters and setting of the story. Nicolás' writing is poetic and is creatively used to describe abstract concepts such as the angels feeling an emotion they've never felt before, experiencing a type of pain that's never been experienced in paradise, or trying to define a word that the angels have never heard before and spoke into existence.

I can't remember the last time I was this immersed in a story and obsessed with an author's writing style. From following the author's Tumblr, I know that he is currently working on a sequel to Angels Before Man and I can't overstate how excited I am to read more of his writing.

P.S. As someone who's been playing the Shin Megami Tensei series of video games for over a decade it was interesting to see the author's interpretations of angels/demons that are playable characters in the video game franchise.

free my man all he did was lead the yaoi revolution in heaven

I'm not even finished with this yet and it's easily a new favorite book. I'm making the mistake of reading it at work and am trying not to cry.

The prose is immaculate, the pacing is perfect for connecting you to Lucifer, and the descriptions of the unknowable amazing.
