Thanks NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m so glad I pushed through the first few chapters because this was a fun read. Each character feels real, and even if you don’t like their actions, you understand them. Not only that, but the choices the characters make have consequences, things are working that are bigger than they are at times, which gives this fantasy story grounding. It didn’t have the complete spell binding effect to give it a higher rating but it’s still a fun read, and I would recommend giving it a shot!

Honestly a nice story that was good fun, nothing unexpected happens which makes it an easy read but not really the book for twists and turns you never saw coming.

However the biggest reason I enjoyed this book was the realistic romance. Aromantic review: genuinely plausible characters who are more concerned with their imminent destruction over a pair of googly eyes and a charming smile. Most importantly has an aromantic character 5 stars for manageable romance that didn't annoy me

Overall a great epic fantasy
With enough notes of traditional myth and originality to enrapture readers

Not sure if this is an issue with the physical or ebook, but listening to the audiobook initially a little confusing hopping between narrators, not a clear introduction/delineation to new characters - especially because female narrators voices are similar.

The various narrators speak at different rates in different chapters - most noticeably the prince sometimes speaks significantly faster than the others. On one hand this is authentic to how people speak, but it can be challenging finding a good flow  for those who listen to books at different speeds (I flex the speed based on the narrator (cadance, clarity), the story flow/how in depth the writing is, and the speed that is currently engaging my brain- usually between 1.5x and 2x).  I am not sure if it would be as noticeable/distracting for someone who doesn't listen at an accelerated speed though.

An easy quick read with funny characters and an interesting plot. It's a unique story and setting that I've never read anything similar too. Definitely recommend if you want fantasy but not anything to heavy.

Perfect pacing!! And to pull off 5 POVs and get them interacting in a meaningful way as fast as this book did 👏👏👏
Great YA. I was totally thrown off today when the audiobook ended because I was all consumed in the story and now I’ve gotta wait for the 2nd!

The story had so much potential but the execution was simply bad. The plot moved way too fast and the author just kept throwing stuff at the reader that made no sense, the characters were shallow and not developed, meaning they were unlikable at best and I didn’t care about them in the slightest at worst. I also don’t understand the praise the author gets for the writing, this felt incredibly cheap and poorly written.
