Thank you NetGalley and Random House Children’s for the eARC!

Amie Kaufman delivers again! I’ve been reading her books for a long time and I absolutely fell in love with this high stakes, high sea adventure. Kaufman has this amazing ability to write easily likable, relatable characters and The Isle of the Gods is no different. Her power really lies in the multiple POV, makes for a compulsive and exciting read. Looking forward to future installments!

A political fantasy with seafaring and gods.
There are 5 different narrators (Selly the daughter a ship captain learning the ropes herself, Keegan a runaway noble on his way to the college (Bibliotek), Lasika a girl trying to break out of her crime lord sister’s shadow that has bought into the religious fervor, Jude an Alinor bastard that has moved to Mellacea and works for the Rubys to help his mother, and Leander the wayward prince and the strongest royal magician ever) that switch with nearly every chapter as the character intersect in their journeys to either prevent a war or start one. There is some it testing commentary on religion motivating “war” and about nobility.

For me, this book had issues with pacing: things were either lots of background and little true action or all out action to the end. Additionally, this felt like too many narrators (which is an issue I had with a previous Kaufman book) and it was hard to truly connect with any of the characters.

Sadly, I think I will be done with this series as it just didn’t work for me.

I didn't expect this book to be so good! I was hooked from the beginning.
I loved the characters and their interactions. It was great to see how they grew closer and made sense of the world around them.
I can't wait for the next book and will reread this one before starting the next!

~I loved the mythology and all of the world building in this book!! There is such an amazing world and absolutely brilliant characters. I loved how they develop and the relationships they form, it is some of the best I have ever read!! This book follows Selly as her goal to finally see her father again after a whole year apart collapses when her crew has to go on a mission across the sea to make a sacrifice to the gods and stop a war. This is a really solid fantasy book that I really enjoyed reading!! I would definitely recommend this book!!

This was not bad at all BUT I feel like there was just too many mentions of those damn gloves (I lost track after 12, but I think it’s like 15 times in this book) just for us to lose them and discover a power that wasn’t explained at all. There was also five POVs here that I’m not sure were needed? Two of them really didn’t add anything to the story except world building and if you took them, we could have still gotten that information and had a shorter book. Because honestly, that’s my main gripe with this book- it’s was too damn long for us to not really do anything but go on a voyage, have people be killed, and learn very little about a war with gods. I also just think have Laskia in here and her whole “I will be worthy of my sister” thing didn’t set her up as someone worthy of a god like the author wanted.

Will I read book 2? I don’t know- that’s 6 months from now and I can’t promise I’ll remember this one by tomorrow so

I have been reading Amie’s work recently and this came up on my list. Different to the sci fi vibes so far! I quite enjoyed this and am keen to see where it goes.

A perfect fantasy adventure YA!

Easy to follow and multi character POV.
Old gods, mythology, sailing, magic and diverse range of characters.

I had written up a review and of course accidentally got rid of it!
So here is my half ass attempt of I loved it! I need more!

Amie Kaufman knows how to write books I enjoy!

I can’t wait for the next one to be out!

Give me book two asap! I need the heart of the world now

Excellently written YA fantasy book that has an intricately built world and magic system while still being easy to digest. My big complaint is that the map at the beginning of the book is garbage and can’t be used at all to help pinpoint where the characters are located. I’m looking forward to reading the follow up book next!
