I have no idea what the hell happened in this book, all I know is that reading it was an utter drag.

So many questions left unanswered, so much of the world not explained, it gets two stars because I like a good, over sized monster fight and it at least delivered that.

Survivors in a dystopia? Sure.

How about a gigantic flying bear? Well, maybe. Will it go all King Kong?
It will? OK, let's see how it works.

Hmm, we still need more weird. Let's go with a sapient cross between a squid and a sea anemone, and let's make it grow fast, and a deadly killer, and a philosopher.

Great, we're set.
Now let's make a story about trust and relationships.

Hmm, dragging a bit here in the middle. Let's bring in a Magician with ground-to-air missiles.
One who may or may not be able to do actual magic. This reader didn't stick around long enough to find out.

I didn't care what happened to Rachel or Wick, or even Borne. Not even a little bit.

Too much weird, not enough story and characters.
Yep. A magician with missiles and a flying superbear don't make a real story.
They are for long car trips with a four-year-old.

Hard to get into this world at first (which is why I’m giving it 4 stars), but really engaging book after that. Loved the bestiary of the world’s creatures at the end!
