My final research paper in a Shakespeare class was on the mythological and symbolical contents of As You Like It. That whole snake and the lion sequence? Sex. A wonderful pastoral comedy.

Two female cousins are exiled and decide for protection to masquerade as a brother and a sister in this Shakespeare comedy.

Okay, look. It’s no surprise that I prefer the comedies over the tragedies. That’s my MO for my reading life. And Shakespeare punches it up with some cross-dressing and pretending (Rosalind pretending to be Ganymede pretending to be Rosalind? Vibes).

I just need everyone to know I'm a huge nerd and I can read Shakespeare even in my sleep. This edition was the best thing that happened to me. It was so detailed and I adored it despite already being really familiar with Shakespeare that I didn't need the notes as much.

Basically, there is nothing much for me to say. It's Shakespeare, it's funny, it's timeless, and I love it all.

This comedy is most definitely not my favorite Shakespeare play. It is full of Shakespeare's trademark witticisms and clever use of language, but the plot felt too preposterous for my taste (not that his other plays aren't preposterous . . but this one also felt less cohesive). For whatever reason, getting through this play was a very slow process.
Although this play is not the best of Shakespeare for reading purposes, I have a feeling it would make for a fabulous live performance (particularly the great parts for female actors).
