Where to even begin? NO PLOT that’s where i’ll start. During this book I learned Hayley Wickenheiser doesn’t like to organize thoughts in chronological order and that she is now a doctor the rest of it I already knew about her. 3 stars because I like hockey and her but the book was too jumpy I was trying to read before bed not play hopscotch. BUT Hayley Wickenheiser you slay!

I don't normally like biographies/memoirs or self-help style books but I thoroughly enjoyed this! I'd definitely say that it's a memoir told with the goal of encouraging others to learn from her mistakes and successes, so it does fall somewhere in the spectrum of those two genres, leaning heavily on the memoir side.

I genuinely felt inspired by Wickenheiser's advice and was moved by her story, at one point to tears! I thought the sectioning of the book following the hockey terminology of defensive/neutral/offensive zones was actually a really good analogy and a cute choice. The writing was also a happy surprise as it was much more stylistic and fun to read than I would expect from this kind of book.

I'll also add that my timing of reading this just as the PWHL gets off the ground was perfect, and probably contributed to how emotional I found the book :)

I really enjoyed this book. Especially since I always dreamed of playing hockey but like Hayley hockey wasn’t for girls. I’m glad she didn’t stand for that and paved a way for future girls and hockey. Lots of great advice she gives.
