Fallout bunkers/Vaults but make it a climate change apocalypse in the face of white cis feminism (TERF) and classism

I really enjoyed the premise and didn't mind how on the nose some exposition was. I can see how some readers would find it off-putting and others would find it helpful.

Recommend for anyone interested in a near-future dystopian queer scifi, and HIGHLY rec for anyone who had ever thought about a "world without men"

self hating lesbians @ the men they serve are a CANCER. i truly hope they die.

has nothing to say and saying that nothing badly.

it was game over for common sense when misogynists of all flavours realized all they needed to do was insert ‘white’ in front of woman in order to get away with saying the most rancid, sexist, shit against women. bleak.

just once, id like for these types of satirizing critiques to resist caricature and actually research the very thing they seem to want to deconstruct. but what did I expect from someone who claims that ‘’most waves of feminism have been terfy & eugenicist?’’ 😂

hilarious—just loud and wrong. but there’s nothing i hate more than when people don’t do the reading yet try to posit themselves as authorities on a subject.

& i didn’t care for the self serious way korn delivered this silliness either. writing was lacking, anemic, and boring. personally think that if an author can’t convey something about a character without the narrative coming to a screeching halt every single time, then maybe it’s time to go back to the drawing board.

i found 'yours for the taking' overall to be an interesting and engaging read. however, i think it had some glaring issues. for example, much of the book felt overly simplistic, glossing over seemingly important details in order to reach a conclusion more quickly. this meant the world-building fell short in places. i think korn was maybe doing too much with this book, trying to pack in various themes and plots which then limited the ability to flesh each of them out fully. certain points felt fairly clumsy / ham-fisted, whilst others felt pretty heavy handed, really labouring the point.

i still liked the book and looked forward to picking it back up but i felt some ideas could have been wrapped up sooner rather than meandering throughout, and other ideas needed to be explored with more subtlety and nuance! i felt the ending was rushed and dissatisfying, without a dramatic climax, but i will probably read the next book in the series if my library acquires a copy.

also, as a personal aside: for all the moralising this book does on various issues, why on earth did there need to be a small section where stone lesbians were discussed so derogatorily? and then later in the book we're told the stone top in question was really only stone because they weren't attracted to their partner and didn't want to say anything, which is just a massive misappropriation and misrepresentation of a very diverse, valid, and nuanced sexual identity. like it was literally so unnecessary!? why was it included lol? you should be able to say “don’t touch me” to anyone ever in any context and not have it be considered in the realm of surprising or insulting imho. it certainly shouldn't be used as a point to question someone's gayness! it was a very small detail, and likely only so insulting to me because i'm a stone lesbian, but still i feel like for how woke this book tries to make itself, it could have really done without the cheap digs.

This is one of the more innovative works of fiction I've read recently. Korn is able to weave multiple perspectives seamlessly into an important and gripping dystopian and slightly sci-fi novel that also digs deep into identity and privilege issues that are some of the leading social issues of today.

Separate from the social and climate issues that are central to the story, the story alone could stand as a gripping post-apocalytic-esque novel. Korn's writing is deep, and literary where it needs to be, yet accessible and engaging when the story requires it. Seeing the story and the struggles from multiple perspectives is necessary to understand the impact that each character's decisions have on each other and on their immediate and more distant environments.

This will definitely be a high-demand book club worthy title when it publishes in December because of Gabrielle Korn's skillful balancing act between the fast-paced story and the surgical precision with which she dissects what it means to be a feminist, the effects of privilege in gender, race, status, and economy, the tension between capitalism and environmentalism, and the importance of finding the humanity within ourselves and within those around us.
