A great first Dawn book! She is a great character, so empathetic and good natured. I love how she recognizes that Kristy is jealous of her friendship with Mary Anne and invites Kristy over to get to know her on her own terms. And she is so mature handling the Barrett kids and their disorganized mom. Good for you Dawn, setting a boundary and refusing to keep doing Mrs Barrett's emotional labour and housework!
This has always been one of my favorite books in the series! I like Dawn a lot and I have always like the conflict of the Barrett children and their disorganized mother and house. I don’t really know why I guess haha but I’ve just always really liked this book so five stars from me!

Ah, the gold old days of the BSC-verse when Kristy hated Dawn just like the rest of us do. This was even before Dawn became a totally insufferable human being, so that's really saying something!
In this one we first meet the Barrett children (Buddy, Suzy, and Marnie) along with their irresponsible mother who needs to get her ever loving shit together. She makes Sharon Schafer's dope smoking absent-minded nature look like a walk in the park, and that's a woman who left pruning sheers in the bread drawer once.
It literally takes Buddy being kidnapped by his own father on Dawn's watch to get Mrs. Barrett to get her head out of her ass and pay better attention. She still manages to convince Dawn to do housework for her for lightly more pay, but hey, girl has to make a dollar so that's whatever. I was just always glad that poor Buddy hadn't been abducted by a child murder. Or aliens. Either one.
I watched a lot of Unsolved Mysteries as a child.

i really relate to dawn’s situation with the barretts! the kids starting to rely on her instead of their own mother is a lot of cause for concern and i’m glad that she decided to discuss it with their mom. the situation with their dad would have freaked any young baby sitter out, but its also nice to know she could rely on the neighbors too. all in all, a pretty good read! 4 stars from me (:
3.5/5
There was quite a lot going on in this one and it made it seem more disjointed than the others, which have pretty focused plot/climax/resolution sequences. BUT the mystery of the main plot really picked up toward the end and I liked seeing the growth and maturity in Dawn and see the rest of the BSC girls come to respect her more!!!
