Like a lot of people, this was my first exposure to Kurt Vonnegut. Although this is not, by far, my favorite of his works, it is a great place to start, because unlike most of his fantastical journeys, this one is based in World War II.

My favorite element to Slaughterhouse Five is how Vonnegut writes himself into the book in the first chapter. Vonnegut is always worth readinf, if only to see how to get away with breaking all of the "rules of writing."

This book surpassed my expectations in many ways, both with

I enjoyed this novel. I read it because I've been in a rebellious mood lately and will probably continue to be rebellious. It's a great starting point if you are also feeling rebellious.

Slaughterhouse-Five follows Billy Pilgrim, a Prisoner of War and survivor of the Dresden firebombing. It explores the post-war trauma before mental illness and trauma were really talked about in public. Billy even has a "mild nervous break" after shortly after WWII, and voluntary checked himself into a psychiatric ward.

Billy Pilgrim is also "unstuck in time." He, at one point, gets abducted by aliens called the Tralfamadorians, and is placed in an alien zoo. But through these aliens, Billy learns how they see life and death. Which he slowly learns, I guess? He is able to revisit moments in his life, causing the storyline to become non-linear.

This was the first time I read Slaughterhouse-Five. I thought I knew what I was getting into when I started it. I was wrong. When people say, "semi-autobiography infused with science fiction", they ✨mean✨ it.

So it goes.

I love Kurt Vonnegut books, and this is one of his best. Read it if you haven’t, it’s a classic.
