Great work on the overall setting though I'm very much a fan of the setting/landscape being a character itself or looming over the story, being very present in it and this book delivered on that !
“It feels like…” she began, reaching for the right words in English. “Forever.” Dissatisfied, she pressed her fingers to the glass, indicating the trees and the white mountains that reflected back the moon. “Like the last stop before forever.” […]
He bent over the dash and looked out at those same mountains, at the wilderness beyond the edge of the town, and he understood. Here in this little scattering of human structures they could still convince themselves they were in the world of people, but once they passed into the woods, it would have been impossible to pretend they had control or authority over anything. Hunters and herders went into those woods or up that mountain from Akhust, and when they did they were surrendering to the primal nature of the world. Akhust stood as a stark reminder of how small a thing it was to be a human being.
