I know I’m in the minority here, but I didn’t particularly like this book. I think it may not be my cup of tea — it’s entirely character driven with little room for assumptions. Everything was told to us, nothing was left for assumptions or surprise. It felt like if the author didn’t know what to do with a character she just killed them off or moved them to a different city.

I’m impressed with the ability to fit so much life and so many characters into a short space. It takes skill & Im not denying that the author is a good writer, but if you prefer a little bit of a challenge with your stories, this isn’t the one for you.

Audiobook:

A beautiful book about a complicated family. This book is like a simple meal prepared perfectly. All the ingredients are of the best quality, and everything is prepared just as it should be. It's not showy and in your face, but in that simplicity is sheer perfection.

Maura Tierney was the perfect narrator.

I enjoyed this book overall! I found it a bit slow at the beginning but then found a steady pace and interest in reading as it progressed. It's about a multigenerational family with a focus on 4 sisters and their lives as they grow from teenage girls to adults. Each chapter switches from a different character's perspective. I wished William as a character had a bit more depth to him. He seemed like he had potential to be "known" as a character at the beginning and he went through so much but I felt we didn't get to know him very well despite him being one of the characters who's perspective the book was written from.
