Full disclosure: this is my favorite kind of book. Decades-sprawling family sagas with mostly women characters where you get to see how everyone grows and changes over time (or doesn’t - you know who you are).

Told chronologically through different characters, it starts with William who is unloved as a boy. His sister died shortly after he was born and his parents basically ignore him. He falls in love with basketball, he falls in love with Julia Padavano who is the eldest of 4 sisters, he then falls in love with being part of the Padavano fam. This is where things start getting interesting and if I tell you anything else it will be a spoiler.

This story felt real and it had me wishing I was the 5th Padavano sister (now I’m back to just feeling like the 4th Haim sister). Love endures, guys.

Ik weet het niet. Vaak vond ik het saai en zo irritant dat niemand met elkaar praat en ze altijd anderen inzetten om moeilijke berichten te brengen. Maar soms ineens waren passages zo mooi. En het bleef me wel boeien. 

“William had de scherpe speren die emoties op hem afvuurden altijd ontweken en elk ongemakkelijk gevoel snel gesmoord. Hij kon maar moeilijk geloven dat andere mensen het leven aankonden als het met zo’n hevigheid op hen afkwam.”
