Very well written, but the john Irving disease (what’s the worst thing I can do to this character?) in the final act was unnecessary and weakened the book for me.
And she would repeat the most insightful or interesting things about the characters, which sort of irritated me. Yes, we know William stood over Alice’s crib and listened to her breathing, you already told us that.
So, ditch the John Irving plot points, and edit the heck out of this book, and it’s absolutely a four star book. Fantastic characters.
Not everything has to go to s**t or go to an emotional 11 to be a good literary fiction novel.
I mostly listened to this book. Maura Tierney is a good narrator.

Wenn ich immer wieder nachsehe, wie viele Kapitel noch übrig sind, bis ich endlich durch bin, ist das meist kein gutes Zeichen. Das war auch hier der Fall. Das Buch hat viele Längen und wirkt durch die drei verschiedenen POVs oft repetitiv. Der Plot ist vorhersehbar und stellenweise ziemlich langweilig. Einzig Alice und William sind ein Lichtblick, die beiden habe ich doch irgendwie ins Herz geschlossen.

I think I just need to stay way from these family drama type of books. They are not bad, but they are not my jam.
This was a fine story about 4 sisters, their close knit family that had levels of disfunction below the cracks and they came out multiple times throughout the book that lead to huge rifts in their family where they didn't talk to each other for years, like 25 years.
That is just insanity to me.
History repeating itself within these family dynamics, rifts, makeups, heartbreak and heart mending. This story takes place from the 80's through 2008.
It was written beautifully, but it is lacking. Even if these books were my jam, the characters are one dimensional. We are told how close they are, we are not really shown how or why they are close, it is just understood that they are.
