It took me a little bit to get into this, but once I locked in, it was all over. Things I texted my friends about this book:
- "I love Shen Qiao being like, 'this rotten old man has incredible martial prowess and he's already the leader of a major sect. He could be a true grandmaster of demonic cultivation to rival Wei Wuxian himself...but he is SUUUUUCH an ASSHOLE being around him is TORTURE uuugggHHHH"

I really love the beginning of this book and the premise that it advertises itself on. The idea of the villain trying to corrupt the hero? Love it! But I felt there was very little work towards that until the end, but then that went too fast.
There was tons of action in this book, tons! But it did get a little to hard to follow at certain points. The end I couldn’t even follow at all as new characters were introduced and I just did not care at that point.
I am torn as to whether or not I will continue this series. I would love to see the actual premise play out, to see more of the complex dynamic of corruption, but I just wanted to get through the book just to finish it.

The duo dynamic is a unique, especially since the two are so different. Yan Wushi is my favorite character, he's so cunning and I love it when he toys with Shen Qiao. There's a lot of world and politics pouring into this book with a great handful of characters. The pacing can be different to follow along, especially when it comes to the events taking place throughout the lands, nations, people, sects, and so forth. Like I said, a lot of information to retain. Overall, I enjoyed book one so far.

the story so far isn’t too bad but even for a danmei it really drags out the detail of who everyone is and where everything it located which is making it seem slow
