I watched the animated TV show before reading the books so I already knew how it was going to end but nonetheless, this series is fantastic!

a retrospective:

Rereading Death Note about 12 or 13 years on was like discovering a teenage diary. I had mostly forgotten about this series, and its popularity in the broader weeb space seemed to dwindle, as my interest in manga also faded. My attraction to Japanese comics and anime as a teenager came from its perceived maturity and otherness. Cartoons, like Pokemon and Yugioh, except all gothic and death obsessed, the kind of stuff my mother wouldn't want me to watch or read. The characters were sexy, too - though a 13 year old would never have admitted that, being so confused and repressed.

Death Note is supposed to be a uniquely un-shonen series (marketed primarily at boys under 16), but it really isn't. It is, how should I put it politely? For pseuds. For those who've always felt misunderstood, underappreciated, and harbouring intense egos. I'm not exactly saying anything surprising - many nerds, specifically young male nerds - have problems with aggression and cruelty, as all men do, to some degree. Death Note is written by a pseud with misogynistic and misanthropic tendencies, and attracts a similar audience as a result. This isn't a criticism, really! I did say I read this whole series before.

(thoughts to continue...)

My all-time favorite manga series. It's the one I never get tired of rereading or rewatching. I especially love the story progression and character development. It stands out above any other series for me.
