I'm not terribly happy with the ending here... The series, as a whole, was quite excellent, but the manner in which Light Yagami's downfall was handled just seemed rather off. I could definitely see him losing control and going a but nutty when he realized he had lost, but begging for his life just really left a bad taste in my mouth for a character I had really grown to enjoy. I expected him to lose and/or die in the ending, it's just what made the most sense for the series, but I didn't like the entire loss of dignity.

It was nice to see Matsuda standing up for what he believes in rather than going along with the flow like he had for the entirety of the series.

I was sad to see Takada wind up being such a weak character, which was the same fate that Misa had. A shame that a good series like this lacked any real strong female leads, with the possible exception of Rem who leaves the series entirely too early for me.

All-in-all, I really enjoyed the series, it just really bugs the way Light goes out.

I've read this manga years ago when it was coming out in America and I loved. This is an excellent story if you love suspense and crime fiction. This is a cast of thousands, but we're focused on two people: Light Yagami aka Kira; who has a notebook given to him by a shinigami named Ryuk, that has the power kill anyone if you write their real name and know their face. Light uses the notebook to kill off criminals and sees himself as a vicious god. And L: The worlds greatest detective who's name and face are unknown and who never lost a case. Who will win? This series spans 9 years as we see the entire investigation from all sides and it builds to a suspenseful conclusion. If you never read manga before, this is a great gateway. Every character has their own growth and you're constantly wondering who will get to whom first. Word of caution: This can be pretty wordy at times, especially when you read each characters' thoughts. And the middle part of the story does get a little slow, but I promise that it does pick up.
