Barbara Parker wrote some excellent legal mysteries that took place in Miami. I would start with her "Suspicion of Innocence." Her whole Suspicion series was excellent!

Several years ago, I did a presentation on free legal research sites at the Missouri Association of Defense Lawyers annual meeting and met a prominent attorney and mystery author from Miami who knew her. He said we should all have lunch together when I'm down there again. Unfortunately, Barbara passed away in 2009, and I missed my opportunity to meet her.

This book follows a litigation lawyer named Gail Connor and she has been working so hard at her law firm and is on the verge of a partnership. She has a successful work life but her personal life, like her marriage, is falling apart. One day her younger sister, Renee, is found dead with her wrists slashed and originally they think this is a suicide but upon further investigation the police believe that someone murdered Renee and they think that Gail did it. Growing up and especially as adults Gail and Renee did not have a good relationship because Gail thought that Renee needed to grow up and stop acting immature. Gail meets one of the best criminal lawyers, Anthony Quintana, and hopes to find out what truly happened to her younger sister.

This is book is amazing and it's been one of my favorite books since I first read it back in 2007. I mean, this book isn't perfect or anything. One of the things that I didn't like about it was I felt that some parts of this book were slow and I don't know if it's because this is a reread for me but I found myself skimming over some sections (mostly the parts where Gail was trying to find information of Jimmy Panther's mask). Other than that I loved this book! One of the things that I love the most is how real the characters are in this book. Gail is a flawed character that made mistakes but she is persistent and smart and tries to do her best. Her marriage to Dave is flawed as well and as the book progresses we can see how it got to that point. One of my favorite parts is Gail's character development/growth in terms of her relationship with her younger sister, Renee. At first Gail doesn't like her sister and sometimes has these feelings that she is ashamed to feel. As the book progresses we see Gail confront these feelings and she starts to make sense of who her sister was and who she was trying to become. My last favorite part, I promise, is Anthony Quintana. I love him as a character and possible love interest because he is somewhat mysterious and very charming. I can't wait to see how Gail and Anthony's relationship progresses in the rest of the books.
