this book was really good at the start. however, it sorta just trinkled out for me. it was not what i was expecting at all and was hoping on a more happier outcome for the mc. regardless, it's evident how the complexity in her upbringing and generational trauma she experienced impacted her. i really didn't like the mc :/ but either way it was a refreshing read on a topic ive never seen done before. A for effort.
A hilarious debut! Loved Eleanor and her family. A must-read for fans of dark humor! Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an ebook arc!

It masquerades as a book about a rogue phd student doing unfunded and unapproved research. rather, this book is more so about the struggles of being immigration, raising children in a different culture than you were raised, and the disassembly of family.

Always lovely to read a book and realize that every character is kind of fucked up. Chang's writing is at times kind of like if you asked someone to write in a stereotypical off-putting literary voice, and at other times surprisingly insightful and raw. I enjoy books about people going through it sometimes. It reminds that I could be worse.

I enjoyed the first half better than the second. I don’t know that the changing perspectives/narrator was effective but I still really enjoyed this.
I enjoyed this book very much. I can understand why it is difficult for others to follow, but for me; aside from the immigration portion, so much of this book resonates with me and how my life has been and where I feel it is now.
