I really wanted to like this book but it never came together for me. Lots of chaos. Lots of dysfunction. No real resolution or reason for any of it. Humans are messy and deal with grief in odd ways but surgery on mice and kidnapping monkeys was all a bit too much.
I'm trying to figure out what the "extremely funny" parts were? I found it frustrating and depressing. I do like Chang's writing and there were some wise nuggets but I didn't gel with this book.

I feel like “meh” perfectly sums up this book. Wasn’t that motivated to read it, wasn’t super invested. It just felt like nothing of importance happened, and I often hated the main character and the choices she made. Finished it but surprised I didn’t give up.
Ironically, this is one of the few books I gave up on. I quit!! Quitter.

I enjoyed the story more than I thought I would. At first I was disappointed in having multiple plot lines told by multiple people, but I found I liked it by the end. However, I was really disappointed that nothing in the book had a real end to it. There were no answers and a whole lot of questions. It felt kinda rushed and at the same time drawn out. The whole book was about her mothers death, but I forgot about that in the middle and then kinda remembered at the end.
Terrible writing. Confusing storyline and time changes. No character development. Was this even edited?
