This book kind of made me feel depressed but in an understandable way. Grief and family are confusing and experienced differently by everyone so I understand why the main character was acting the way she was and I was fine with no true and clear happy ending.
2-1/2 stars, rounded up. I feel really shallow, but I'll say it: What the Sam Hill did I just read? The characters bewildered me. There's so much incomprehensible, self-destructive behavior. No one seems to want much of anything; they just lurch around from misery to misery. I must be missing something, because it's highly recommended by the likes of Michelle Obama,the New York Times and NPR critics, with descriptions like "sublime wit" and "extremely funny." Yes, it's quirky and well-written, and a laboratory monkey running amuck gave me a brief moment of hope -- that's halfway through the book, mind you -- but to me it was pretty much a gloom-fest.
I stuck around because it read pretty quickly and I figured life had to improve, for someone, eventually. I guess it does, but why isn't clear. There are some effectively poignant notes near the end ... maybe I was just the wrong reader at the wrong time. But if you're looking for a light, funny read, I'd keep looking.

This book was awful. The main character makes mistakes and just gets away with it. Life goes back to original plan regardless of getting rid of a scientific specimen, cheating on her husband, and many others that just....oh well.
