I will say it didn’t get interesting for me until about 40% of the way through bc we’re just as in the dark about everything as Poppy is. Not everything can be revealed right away and that was part of the world building and mystery of the plot which I feel like a lot of people are overlooking. (Dare I say much like TOG but everyone sings its praises, rightfully so I love that series too). Tbf, you can’t really see that until the very end.
I both see and don’t see how this book gets the amount of hate it does. I can respect if people just don’t like the book but to call it trash? I’ve read way worse or straight up DNFed other romantasy before (it takes A LOT for me to DNF personally).
First of all I think people are forgetting that Poppy is an 18 year old who’s been indoctrinated, sheltered and barely has any life experience. Her entire world and what she’s been told is a lie. She’s not a 25+ woman who should know better. She SHOULD be naive, emotional and at times irrational. <spolier>That’s what her enemies wanted and that’s how they raised her.
This isn’t a literary masterpiece but not every single romantasy HAS to be GOD-TIER in order to be good or great or even likeable.
Also, the phrases that ppl say get repeated 100s of times really only get used MAYBE 5 times. It’s not THAT repetitive in my opinion.
Let’s also remember that the author has a RECOMMENDED reading order bc SHES THE ONE WHO WROTE THE STORY. So if didn’t go about that route and don’t like the series…. Well 🤷🏻♀️
Overall, I enjoyed it, especially toward the end. Banter was great and I like that even thought Poppy can be naive at times, she’s not afraid to speak up for herself when she feels like she’s being disrespected and ask for what she wants (sexually and otherwise). She reminds me of Bryce from CC in that way. Anyways, that’s just my take. I’ll be continuing the series.

When I watch movies and tv shows, I'm often guessing the endings, or the next story beat and that can often be boring. But I can say with confidence that the ending of this book surprised me - in the best way! Plus, the spice-to-plot ratio was spot on, especially for what essentially is forbidden romance.
Poppy is a Maiden, chosen by the gods to help ascend the next generation of youth. A vague concept as it's meant to also be ingrained as almost a religious and honored event within the world. Tropes I noticed (and loved) within this book are: enemies to lovers, forced proximity, miscommunication, not so distressed damsel, and
