“You’re an absolutely stunning, murderous little creature.”

As far as tropes go, this checked off some of my favorite ones! It was a slow burn, angsty, forbidden romance. Pure romantasy. Poppy and Hawke. You could feel their chemistry from the beginning. Hawke was able to bring her out of her shell and she started experiencing life. I can’t wait to see more of Poppy’s character development throughout the series!! Their banter makes me giggle. GIGGLE! She’s always trying to put him in his place, but, little does she know…

Poppy is living a life that she doesn’t want. A life full of abuse and restrictions. She’s expected to live the life of a Maiden, and with that, comes responsibility that she doesn’t care about. Unable to interact with anyone other than her guards, and a few others, she yearns for a normal life.

Hawke. My new obsession. The definition of “touch her and die”. He stands up for her when no one else does. He protects her, even though she can handle her own, and always make sure she’s safe with him.

On a deeper level-
This book is about not having a choice. It’s about the abuse of power within religious context. It’s about leaders who exploit their authority to manipulate and control their citizens.

“Maybe I truly wasn't worthy of being a Maiden, because I found it hard to have faith in anything without knowledge of it.”

I loved every second of this read. Captivating. Action packed. Angsty.
I do wish there was more world building throughout, but, this is the first book. Maybe it’ll come throughout the series!

Fuck Hawke… Casteel… The Dark One… Prince…Whatever his name is now! How could he?! The betrayal. The heartbreak. This man is the reason why so many of her loved ones are dead. DEAD! He’s a monster, quite literally. The fact that he took her virginity, without giving her the whole truth, is so sick and twisted. How heartbreaking is that? To sleep with someone for the first time, ever, only to realize you didn’t really know them AT ALLLLLL! The plotting and manipulation… How am I supposed to believe a single word that comes out of his mouth, regarding his feelings? I’m bamboozled. I’m shook. I … love him. How fucking sick of me. What kind of toxic game is this?!
