I've been trying to put my finger on what this reminds me of and I think I finally figured it out - the Father Brown tv show with Mark Williams. It's charming and very episodic, but instead of solving small town murders, this is about a young veterinarian who needs to stick his hand inside every living livestock animal in Yorkshire. It was sweet, but often pretty gross! I was expecting the foibles of local farmers and fun animal puzzles, but was not expecting such a variety of prolapses and, uh, vaginal spelunking. It was really interesting, but the pastoral serenity is a mirage. Don't fall for it like I did.

I really enjoyed the little vignettes and the different client characters, but Siegfried did reeeeeally get under my skin. I think I was supposed to find him funny, but I found him to be really irritating. The way he refused to acknowledge when he was wrong or even remember what he said made me SO mad.

And ooh, boy, this is a slow book. Each anecdote is really small, so the book goes like molasses. But if you're into a sluggish and serene book full of bodily fluids, grumpy farmers, and loveable animals, this is really soothing and interesting.
