I really like the TV series on PBS and I wanted to read it directly from the source. There are a couple differences—most notably Mrs. Hall is only mentioned occasionally and briefly. I also wish there had been more about Helen. Otherwise, the show was faithful to the material.

It's written less as a story with a beginning, middle, and end but more as a collection of anecdotes and episodes. Makes it really easy to pick it up and read a couple chapters here and there and then go read something else. If I hadn't borrowed it, I probably would've gone through it at a much more leisurely pace.

That being said, it's a relaxing and enjoyable read. There were even a couple times I laughed out loud. I'll probably make my way through the rest of the memoirs at some point.

This was such a fun little read. My grandma told me about this series when I saw her at Thanksgiving a few months ago, and she told me she missed her old copies that got lost. For Christmas, I got her an edition of this book from 1971, and she got me the newest edition from 2018. Can't wait to call her and tell her how much I enjoyed James Herriot's stories; he's got a great sense of humor, and I loved learning about his practice. I hope to pick up the rest of the series one day, too.

Some quotes I liked:

"It was easy to be a prophet of doom when the young men emerging from the colleges after a hard five years' slog were faced by a world indifferent to their enthusiasm and bursting knowledge," (p. 8).

"The sight of that man dancing frantically on his patient's ribs taught me a great truth--that I was going to look just as big a fool at fairly regular intervals throughout my career," (p. 37).

"It was as though he recognized something there--something of the strength and authority of t'owd doctor--and reached out eagerly toward the lost days," (p. 46).

"Yet what made him trail down that hillside every day in all weathers? Why had he filled the last two years of those two old horses with peace and beauty? Why had he given them a final ease and comfort which he had withheld from himself?
It could only be love," (p. 285).

I've been trying to put my finger on what this reminds me of and I think I finally figured it out - the Father Brown tv show with Mark Williams. It's charming and very episodic, but instead of solving small town murders, this is about a young veterinarian who needs to stick his hand inside every living livestock animal in Yorkshire. It was sweet, but often pretty gross! I was expecting the foibles of local farmers and fun animal puzzles, but was not expecting such a variety of prolapses and, uh, vaginal spelunking. It was really interesting, but the pastoral serenity is a mirage. Don't fall for it like I did.

I really enjoyed the little vignettes and the different client characters, but Siegfried did reeeeeally get under my skin. I think I was supposed to find him funny, but I found him to be really irritating. The way he refused to acknowledge when he was wrong or even remember what he said made me SO mad.

And ooh, boy, this is a slow book. Each anecdote is really small, so the book goes like molasses. But if you're into a sluggish and serene book full of bodily fluids, grumpy farmers, and loveable animals, this is really soothing and interesting.
