I cannot recommend this book enough, despite the sadness and horrors depicted in Warsaw during WWII. Elzbieta lives with her adopted mother and father when she becomes aware of what is going on in the Warsaw ghetto. At the same time we get glimpses into Elzbieta’s life, Roman enters the story, as he and his Jewish family are trapped in the ghetto. How these two meet and firm a relationship might form the backbone of the story, but the realities of life in the ghetto, as well as life for the righteous gentiles who wanted to help, are the meat of the story. The descriptions of what Jewish children faced are heartbreaking but important to understand as we face the threats of Fascism today. Thanks to Kelly Rimmer, and to Edelweiss for giving me the opportunity to read this moving and emotional story.

4.5 stars. I really liked this book with all of its complexities and details about the war and different facets that you don't normally hear about. It did seem a little stretched out and prolonged in some sections but I loved all of the closure that you got about everything at the end and the characters just seemed so real that it was very easy to fall in love with them.
