Dickens is always enjoyable, but also always also kind of an ordeal, if that makes sense. He has excellent writing; humorous, descriptive and beautiful. However, it is an older style of writing, which means longer sentences and descriptions; beautiful as they are, if you are not really in the mood to dig in and actually read for not just the story but the pictures he paints, then it is difficult to get into. When you do get into it, it is magnificent. His descriptions are vivid and create a tangible scene. His characters are distinctive and very individualized.

There are no characters without a clear personality in a Dickens story. Copperfield himself is very likeable. We watch him grow up from a young child. He does have hardships, especially in his younger life after his mother dies, but his life is overall a pretty happy one (for a Dicken's story). In his older days he has agonies of the heart as he seeks the object of his affection, Dora. His "undisciplined heart" as he calls it. Mr. and Ms. Murdstone, his stepfather and step-aunt, are the most vile people you can imagine. Their cruelty and stiffness make you stiffen up as you read. Pegotty, his nursemaid is kind-hearted and loving, as is her family. Of course there is his aunt Betsy Trotwood, who renames him Trotwood Copperfield. Someone we'd rather forget is Uriah Heep, a twisty, writhing, uncomfortable "umble" man. His character is so vivid that I actually felt uncomfortable enough when reading his chapters to want to skip it altogether. Not last by any means, are Dora and Agnes, but there really are too many to keep listing.

It wasn't my favorite book of Dickens, but it was very good. I think sometimes it takes a while to sink in after I'm finished.

good lord, he’s a YAPPER!!!!! honestly prob would’ve given this book 3 stars if i hadn’t read demon copperhead before it… it’s frustratingly long and david copperfield has very little agency as a character. Like every even seems to kinda happen to him as he floats from one misfortune to the next not really participating in causing or resolving them idk

This is probably 2.5 stars. Charles Dickens forces in a happy ending, which I'm sure was well received by readers at the time, but I feel a darker ending would have served the story better.

Never hurts to re-visit the classics. The journey can be a bit dull at times but being well-read is a virtue worth pursuing, imho.

Some of the first Dickens I have read. I enjoyed the tone of the story being told for the very first time. As if he was writing me a letter to tell me the story of his life. There were some good life lessons throughout the book and some good laughs as well.
