Annie notices that her cat, Taffy, is not her usual companionable self. Annie tries to set herself up with some new playmates by luring them into her yard with corn cakes. But none of them, not the moose, deer, bear, or any others, are what she had in mind. Who will be Annie's new friend? Scandinavian setting.

Annie needs to learn how to show a little gratitude. Regardless, Huzzah! 4 stars for the cutie animals!

Great pictures. Crazy nonsensical plot.

I love Jan Brett. The illustrations are so beautiful. We love to make up side stories about what's going on in the border illustrations after we finish the written story.

Jan Brett nostalgia fest. I had no idea she featured so heavily in my childhood. This book was a lifestyle aspiration of mine for a long while. To live alone in a cabin, surrounded by snow and animals? Hells yeah.
(Still is a lifestyle aspiration, let's be honest.)

I am being a Stuffy Grown-Up Adult about this one, but let's look at what we have here: little girl has cat, cat leaves in the middle of winter for woods, girl is like "welp, looks like I need a new pet 'cause that one's not coming back," so she proceeds to use up all of her food to attract wild animals.

Then the cat comes back with kittens and she's not alone anymore yay.

Illustrations are gorgeous, but the story doesn't… quite make sense.
