My flight companion en route to Crete. Found it fairly brave, evocative in stringing along a historical narrative despite a really contrived device of flashback. And it almost brought the experience of leper colony of Spinalonga pretty close, and just while I was getting used to it, the descent of Nazis on the island had me breathless with the casual and subtle stringing of history. However, just as I was beginning to admire the work, she folded both the historical threads, killed off the most relatable of characters and the whole affair descended into an execrable Greek daytime soap that made me wish I could throw this into the Libyan sea from my room's window. Eventually donated it to my hotel lobby. Why didn't she go the whole hog and work a little harder with the characters and history she started out so well with?
