the hoarded money gives its owner the status of a predator. it immunizes him against death (...) capitals logic of accumulation corresponds exactly to the archaic economy of violence"

the topics were very hit or miss to me. death drive in the context of capitalism, performance culture (esp in korea), & hypocrisy in neoliberalism are definitely the standouts, with a few other misc great points sprinkled in.

was slugging through it at some points because i just dont agree with the authors takes, nor agree with the length he writes about it. did not like the extensive length on surveillance & data (maybe it wasnt that much but it felt disproportionately lengthy to the other, far more interesting essays), and loathed the execution on pornography & eroticism. trivial analysis' (ie emotion vs feeling), lots of repetition throughout, & the underlining sense of morbid pessimism dampened the whole.

personally found his overwhelming pessimism constrictive & a hindrance to more productive thought especially with the 'conversation' section in the latter half (fascinating man, but wow tbh i dont like u). really wished he wrote more about the three aforementioned topics!

"why revolution is impossible today" & all the commentary on communist concepts being altered to actively live in modern capitalism was wonderful & there are some really interesting takes (the relationship of depression, narcissism & performance was another highlight food 4 thought) and consuming theory from a less western orientation is lovely!

overall net worth a read since the majority is short & digestible xo
