This was such a breath of fresh air to read during the craziness of the world. In Bringing Down the Duke we follow Annabelle a country belle who is attending Oxford under a scholarship. Set during Regency times in England she begins to work with suffragist movement and finds herself drawn to the Duke of Montgomery. Naturally he is one of the most powerful men in London and also known as being enigmatic and cold. This was a great romp of a read and I loved the feminist tone of it. I loved Annabelle, the Duke, and all of the other side characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series when it comes out at the end of the year.
I liked the story, plot, and characters, but there are three major reasons I’m not rating this higher:
1. It’s written in 3rd person.
2. There were few transitions between scenes and it felt like literary whiplash every 5 minutes.
3.I realize this is a historical romance, but the overuse of obscure, antiquated words and phrases was tiresome and unnecessary. It was like the author had an old-timey thesaurus handy and consulted it every other paragraph to make the story sound historic. What it actually did was add nothing to the story, slowed down my reading, and infuriated me when a much more simple word or phrase could be used. I doubt if they used half these words in late 1800s England.

I liked the plot and the setting. I liked the interwoven political back drop. I did find the main characters lacking in depth a bit. He was a jerk and that was the bulk of his personality. She annoyed me because a lot of her personality was how smart she was and how poor she was. But I liked the last half of this book and the resolution a lot.
