The first half of the book... Lovely. Cute. Intriguing enough to push me along. The second half of the book... YES. YES. YES. Picks up momentum until at a full sprint and I'm turning pages at lightening speed, trying to prevent my eyes from skipping lines.
I thought it would be a pretty enjoyable book, but the ending really grabbed my attention, left me feeling satisfied and in turn, skyrocketed my opinion of the entire story.

What does a duke like Do. Also hey dude! if you’re proposing to someone maybe don’t imply that they’re a whore just because they don’t wanna ruin your legacy by being wife???? Lot of ups and down for me tbh. Loved the couple. Hated the guy at some points. Like dude take a chill pill. However! the ending was amazing. Could’ve used a better proposal tho. There were like 4 in this book and they were all varying levels of badness.

I have very mixed feelings about this book.
I liked Annabelle, the heroine. She got a scholarahip to study at Oxford and leaving her cousin Gilbert behind seems like the most logical thing to do instead of
Sebastian, the Duke, seems like a cold man but once the story progresses, he is everything Annabelle needs him to be. I don't like him much but I understand their chemistry and why they work.
I just wish their conflict at the last few chapters did not happen because I was rolling my eyes because Annabelle throwing those wprds was unnecessary. But, it led to the ending so it did work out for the best.
The plot- Things moved because of the actions of the people not because of the environment around them wgich I enjoyed. I hate when people just keep in reacring tot he environmennt and not do anything.
I am glad we got to see how Annabelle fared without money and the privilege since she is poor and struggling to make ends meet. It was sth so small but including that made the story feel raw in a way.
The hopelessness she felt when she had to face the consequences of her actions even thoigh it was to help her friend. No good deed.....
Sth that i noted, it did not feel like I was reading a book that was hustorical. It could be the grammar and English used, but it made this book feel more modern
The other characters introduced were each different with their little quirks and I cannot wait to read more about them.
It was a HEA but it was an ending that was good and deserved.

The writing was really good, but Sebastian rubbed me the wrong way for a lot of the book. I absolutely loved Annabelle’s character though and I really enjoyed the story overall!

"Bringing Down the Duke" by Evie Dunmore is a delightful historical romance set in the late 19th century, blending rich historical detail with a compelling love story. The novel follows Annabelle Archer, a determined and intelligent woman who earns a scholarship to Oxford, and Sebastian Devereux, the stern and powerful Duke of Montgomery. As their worlds collide, the story deftly explores themes of women's rights, social expectations, and personal growth.
Dunmore's writing is engaging, and she brings her characters to life with vivid descriptions and sharp dialogue. Annabelle is a relatable and inspiring heroine, while Sebastian's transformation from a seemingly cold aristocrat to a man capable of deep love and understanding is beautifully portrayed. The romance is both tender and passionate, making this a must-read for fans of historical romance and strong, independent heroines.
