This is actually a 4 star romance novel. Fun and not as predictable as many others.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! I haven't had a lot of luck in the past with historical romance, so this was a lovely surprise.

I did expect something more like a rom com, of which this is decidedly not imo, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment as I do like angst lol

I also really liked the historical/political story with the suffragists.

It is short of 5 stars for me because though I enjoyed the love story between Annabelle and Sebastian, I am quite tired of the stoic and brooding hero. He didn't really offer anything new or fresh as a male character in a novel like this.

Regardless, I do recommend this to anyone who thinks they'd enjoy historical romance, I didn't want to put it down at times.

One star less purely because I couldn't see more of their marital life and how much this made me restless. Now I fricking love annabelle just for how she didn't become his mistress and shame on him for offering only that to my ethereal goddess

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore is a delightful blend of historical romance and feminist themes set against the backdrop of 19th-century England. The novel follows the story of Annabelle Archer, a determined and intelligent young woman who earns a scholarship to Oxford University—a rarity for women then. However, her scholarship comes with strings attached: she must support the women’s suffrage movement.

Annabelle is entangled with the powerful and enigmatic Duke of Montgomery, Sebastian Devereux, as part of this mission. The sparks between them fly from the moment they meet, and what follows is a captivating tale of love, societal expectations, and personal growth.

Dunmore crafts a richly detailed world where the constraints of Victorian society are vividly portrayed, yet she infuses the narrative with modern sensibilities, making it both historically accurate and relevant to contemporary readers. The novel deftly balances romance with a commentary on women’s rights, creating a story that is as thought-provoking as it is heartwarming.

With sharp dialogue, well-developed characters, and a plot that keeps you turning the pages, Bringing Down the Duke is a must-read for fans of historical romance who appreciate a strong, independent heroine and a love story that challenges the status quo.

This is everything I expected. Light, cheesy, happily ever after. A convenient chance encounter around every corner. The romance is saucy, compelling, and convincing. The band of merry suffragists maybe a little less convincing, but that’s okay. This was a fun one.

If Bridgerton and Downton Abbey had a cutesy romantic baby. Gosh I loved it.
