I didn't go in with any expectations for this book to MEET, other than they it had the potential to be CUTE. However, this British tale wasn't really my cup of tea.
...I'm sorry. Those puns were bad...
Otherwise, I had three main issues here.
1.) The pacing of the book was odd. Nearly the entire first half focuses on awkward meet-cutes (the initial meeting in a rom-com, if you're American like me and didn't know) that are doomed from the start and they are NOT generally connected to the MMC. There are a few brief moments with the main love interest throughout this portion, and these moments were a highlight of the book. So sweet and engaging! And I loved the banter between them during their first 3 or so interactions. The second half focuses more on their shared story, but that same flirtiness isn't as apparent. It took me a while to pinpoint why, but I think it's because even though this is painted as a rom-com, the MMC is oddly absent throughout large portions of the book. Which brings me to...
2.) There is a lot of telling-not-showing going on here. We hear about how well the leads get along and about how attractive he is and about how she feels such a strong pull to him, but we don't get to see this in their interactions as strongly as I think is necessary to create a believable romance. In part, I think it is again because the MMC is weirdly absent throughout the book. I also think the FMC's banter and interactions with one of the side characters are significantly sexier than that with the MMC... which I don't think was the author's goal by any means.
3.) This book just has so many tropes I dislike. I'm going to list them in no particular order. (*Mild spoilers for the rest of this paragraph.*) FMC is NotLikeOtherGirls™. One bed, but they don't share. Miscommunication. Fade-to-black in the most unsatisfying way. Poor girl's problems are solved by rich man.
***Also, possible trigger warning that this book contains brief descriptions of dubious sexual consent, the repercussions of which are not well-explored.***
I said in one of my updates that this gave me How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibes, and I still stand by that. Probably a decent, easy read for someone who liked that movie and who doesn't mind the things I listed above. This book just wasn't to my tastes in general.
