“Why did you leave me? Why did you run? Why can't we stay together”? Her mind reeled with sudden panic. “I'll go with you. Whatever we have to do, I'll do it.”

Ah The Breakaway, where do I even begin with this book? I had my eyes on it for MONTHS before finally caving in and buying the damn book, stupid of me to buy this book and start reading it late at night…I was up till 5 in the morning finishing The Breakaway cause I could not find a good stopping point, this book completely captured me. Captured me..get it?? Lame joke I know (._.)

So The Breakaway is about Naomi Jensen, to outsiders it may look like she has the perfect life, hell maybe she even convinced herself for awhile she had a great life, but with a boyfriend that says he loves her, then hits her, and parents that never give her the time of day, maybe Namoi's life isn't so great after all. One night after being hit once again Naomi needs some space from her boyfriend Brad, she goes for a walk. Naomi didn't know on this very walk she would be kidnapped by a group of criminals, little did she know that she was also going to fall in love with one of them..

This book was delightfully wonderful, in a very twisted weird way that I don't really understand yet. I don't know what it is about books that have main characters going through Stockholm syndrome in them, but I love it. I love it so much, and for some reason I always find myself loving the "bad" guy that kidnaps the girl. Actually let me rephrase that, I love the "bad" guy if they are actually caring and non-forceful to their hostage (such as in this book, and Stolen by Lucy Christopher which is a book beyond amazing and you should read it). I don't know what it is about these crazy obsessive guys, but I like them! Actually I do know what it is that makes me like them, it's because they are interesting to read, simple as that, crazy people are unpredictable and I like that in the books I read!

Alright now lets talk about the man in question, JESSE! He is our hostages "love"interest if you may. My first impression of him was that he was creepy, very creepy, this guy gave me the chills! I was also wondering the first few times I encountered him while reading if he didn't have a mental illness, but don't worry! He eventually stops being creepy and he becomes, very well, likable! I found myself enjoying him towards the end of the book, and the romance in The Breakaway was an amazing one between the Naomi and Jesse.

Overall I actually found myself liking most of the characters; each character was very different than the next. Each character also had their own secrets, which of course made this even more of a thrilling ride. In all this was just an amazing read, I was originally going to give this book 4 stars because I didn't like how it ended, BUT then I found out it is actually going to have a sequel (which I believe is going to be brilliant!) so I gave this 5 stars since the story did not end there.

Sidenote: This book does NOT have any sexual abuse, although it does have physical abuse such as the main character getting hit a few times and pushed around.

This book definitely caught me by surprise. I was definitely disturbed and turned off by parts of the story, but I couldn't help but love it overall. The story revolves around Naomi -- switching to the perspectives of her parents every so often -- who is kidnapped at the beginning of the story. But, it's not your normal kidnapping. These captors did not intend on taking Naomi at all. It was only by a freak accident that she happened to be there and they thought she might have seen something. The captors end up treating her very well -- other than the fact that she cannot go out into the real world or see her family. And she ultimately falls for one of the men who has held her captive for so long.

I found the story captivating, intense at times, emotional, and disturbing. Naomi is a very passive character, who kind of just goes along with what the captors want her to do. She barely fights it and barely tries to escape. I found her character to be very frustrating most of the time. Where I would have run/fought for my life -- for freedom -- Naomi didn't. However, I couldn't help but feel sorry for her.

It was an interesting concept for a novel and I found it difficult to grasp at how a person could grow so close to these people who have taken her away from her life. She begins to view them as family and has an intimate relationship with one. I didn't like the relationship between her and Jesse for the majority of the novel. I found it weird and disgusting. But, now, having finished the story, I get it. Even I (an outsider) am on board with the two being in love now. It's weird and it's creepy, but if you read the book, I think you'll be able to see how I was able to get there.

I was confused for the first bit of the novel. I didn't understand the whole kidnapping situation. How long they were planning on keeping her. What their plan was. Why they were treating her the way they were. But, now I think that was the whole point all along. Because Naomi doesn't really understand either. But, it really bugged me. It bothered me more that it bothered Naomi, I think. But, it did keep me turning those pages! And I'm glad it did, as my overall impression of the novel is a positive one. I would recommend this book to any fans of realistic fiction. I thought it was a gooder...I liked it more than I even expected I would.

One thing that I want from books is to experience things that I wouldn’t experience in real life.

“Jesse wrapped a hand around her arm.“I won’t let them hurt you,” he whispered, then gently nudged her into her room and followed her inside.”

I have had, for a long time, an interest in Stockholm syndrome. People usually just say someone has it as a label to put on someone. Oh you grew to care for your captor; you have therefore been brainwashed, they kidnapped you, they are bad, you have Stockholm syndrome. Here’s some therapy, you will be normal in no time. It’s not an illness. Not in the way I think and this book explains this. People think that kidnappers are always emotionless creeps. But they are people. And they have emotions. Is kidnapping wrong? Yes! Don’t misunderstand me there. Kidnapping is wrong and they deserve to go to jail. But a person, who has been captured, but has grown to care for a person who has not hurt them, is not ill. This book portrays this very well.

Straight away I understood Naomi’s confusion about the situation she has found herself in. It was interesting being inside her head and I could easily relate. She is not a strong kickass heroine but it is not that type of book. She does things I probably would have done if I were in her shoes.

We also get to read the point of view of Naomi’s mother. Naomi has a very clear view of what her mother is to her in her life; what she believes her mother is feeling. Getting to read from her mother’s point of view gave us a more rounded view of what the situation at home was like. I wouldn’t say the mother’s parts were my favourite but it was still interesting to discover.

Jesse became more mysterious as the book progressed. He was not just a plain flat character. He has a past which I wanted to discover more about. Jesse and Naomi’s relationship was slowly paced and believable. She didn’t fall for him straight away. A friendship was created first before romance. What made it even more believable is that they knew each other for a long time before love.

The book moves forward quite quickly. This book takes place over a year in 300 pages. Quite a few of the chapters are told from a different month. The next chapter is very often set in the next or a few months later. Therefore you have to remember that the relationships formed would have developed in that time and you have to fill in the blanks. This is what helps with the believability of Naomi and Jesse’s relationship and her feeling towards the rest of her captors.

There were a lot of references to literature and what books can mean to different people. I loved that as a book lover even though they were mostly classic tales which I don’t read. But I can still relate.

The ending was intense. The emotion turmoil increased tenfold and I couldn’t stop reading. I wanted more once it ended. You can’t just leave me like that. An epilogue maybe? I will just have to be content with my own imagination.

Apologies if this review is not very good. It is one of those books where I have found it hard to express why I like it. That is why I have ratings. I enjoyed this book and if you are looking for an intense emotional read I would recommend you check this book out.

Falling in love with your kidnapper? How crazy is that? Pretty crazy, but this girl's life isn't normal anyway.

I hate thought-provoking books for making my head spinning with overly-thinking about them and for the conflicted monologues I keep having even hours after finishing them. My head still hurts.

I don't honestly know how I am truly feeling about The Breakaway, I can't tell if I liked it or not. One thing is for sure: I have never felt so outraged, angered at a character my whole reading-life.

This is the first book I read about abduction and Stockholm Syndrome, I usually steer clear from books that deal with heavy subjects and know would eventually make me uncomfortable, they are in fact at the top of my Out-of-Comfort-Zone list. However it wasn't as heavy as I thought it would be. It didn't have the abuse or constant violence, her captors treated her like she was part of the family but they couldn't/won't let her go; but that didn't stop me from feeling bewildered and sometimes even repulsed by what I was reading.

Full review to come.

I liked it, I guess that's all I can say and hopefully the second book will be better, but to me there was something missing, I don't know what, but it felt unfinished.

I had heard so many great things about this book before. SO when I decided to start reading it I was afraid it wouldn't live up to my expectations. But, it did!!! I really enjoyed this book! I had never read a book about this topic, so I was excited to see how it played out. Naomi was a great character. I felt bad for how her life was, not having her parents around and there for her. Sometimes I wondered why she would stay with her kiddnappers, but really, they treated her better then her parents did. And plus, there was Jesse!!! Who wouldn't want to stay if he was there!!

Found out there is another book! SOOO FREAKING EXCITED! Cant wait for it!
